Massachusetts House passes social media ban for young teenagers

BOSTON (WWLP) – The Massachusetts House voted on Wednesday to implement what they call the most restrictive ban on social media usage for teenagers in the country.

This bill is meant to reduce the negative impact social media is proven to have on teenagers’ mental health.

It would ban minors under age 14 from using social media, and require social media companies to obtain parental consent for 14 and 15 year olds. 16 year olds would be able to use social media without parental consent, but parents can obtain any data minors submit to companies.

Representative Kate Lipper-Garabedian pointed to a quote from former surgeon general Vivek Murthy. “The mental health crisis among young people is an emergency, and social media has emerged as an important contributor,” Murthy said.
