No More Cellphones In Maine Schools

News Radio WGAN

The state budget signed Friday by Governor Janet Mills included a ban on cellphone use during the school day at public schools.

According to the supplemental budget, school boards have until August 1 to install a policy which bans the use of phones or other electronic devices throughout the day.

The ban would be bell-to-bell in all schools in the state.

The Maine Department of Education will provide some models for some school departments, and exceptions will be made for programs students are enrolled in.

The total cost to implement the ban is about $350,000.

The state budget signed by Mills also includes $300 relief checks, free community college, and a millionaire tax.
