Indiana’s new “bell-to-bell” cellphone restriction law is a long overdue step toward restoring order, focus and meaningful learning in our schools.
For years, teachers across the state have faced an uphill battle competing with buzzing phones, social media notifications, games and constant digital distractions during class time. Anyone who has spent time in a modern classroom knows the problem is real. Students cannot fully engage in lessons, discussions or critical thinking when their attention is divided between the teacher and a screen.
Lawmakers deserve credit for recognizing that reality and taking action.
The new law, which takes effect July 1, requires Indiana schools to prohibit student use of personal wireless devices throughout the school day. That includes cellphones, smart watches and similar electronics, while still allowing commonsense exceptions for emergencies, medical needs and students with documented accommodations.
