Bend High cell phone ban gone ‘smoothly,’ says admin and students

Bend High’s hallways and common area filled Thursday morning with students on their way to class. The extended passing period allowed students more time to eat and socialize. Some were holding water bottles, coffee drinks or breakfast.  Something almost no student was holding? A cell phone.  Bend-La Pine Schools implemented the bell-to-bell device ban in early January. It was the last of the Central Oregon school districts to do so and came in just under the deadline set by Gov. Tina Kotek. For high schools, the policy change meant that students cannot use their devices during passing periods and at lunch. Phones during class have been banned for several years, said administrators. Now, phones can’t be used during school hours at all.
