Vermont school district says cellphone bans are showing positive results

WINOOSKI, Vt. — With some Vermont school districts implementing cellphone ban policies, educators said they have been working well so far.

"Being a parent as well, I know that it's a really, really hard thing to put limits on," Kate Grodin, co-principal at Winooski Middle and High School, said.

Grodin's district is one of multiple that have been enforcing day-long cellphone bans since the start of the school year.

"The clarity has really helped keep any of the power struggles or misunderstandings out of the way and has led to students engaging with each other a lot more," Grodin said.

Vermont districts and supervisory unions are not required to implement these policies until next school year under state law. Those implementing the policy now, like Winooski, say it’s been working out for students.
