California schools will be required to restrict, prohibit student cell phone use in 2026

In 2026, all school districts in California will be required to adopt policies restricting or prohibiting students’ use of smartphones during the school day.

The new law also requires the policy to be updated every five years.

Gov. Gavin Newsom initially signed Assembly Bill 3216 into law in 2024, but it doesn’t go into effect until July 2026.
