Washington weighs statewide 'away for the day' cell phone policy in schools
Taking phones out of Washington classrooms has been discussed for years. Now, state leaders are pushing for a single rule that would apply to students across the state.
Gov. Bob Ferguson is making a statewide cell phone restriction in schools one of his top legislative priorities for the 2027 session.
The proposal, commonly referred to as an “away for the day” policy, would require students to leave their phones behind when they arrive at school and retrieve them at the end of the day.
