PORTLAND (WGME) -- Portland school leaders adopted a new cellphone ban in local schools Tuesday night.

Districts across Maine and the nation are becoming increasingly alarmed at just how distracting cellphones can be in the classroom.

Tuesday night, the Portland School Board voted to ban them during school hours starting next year.

After a back-and-forth debate about the wording of the policy and making amendments to it, the school board voted to pass the cellphone ban in Portland schools.

Right now, the policy lists personal devices such cellphones, smart watches and similar electronics as items students would not be allowed to have on them during the school day from the time of the first bell to the last bell of the day, with only a few exceptions.

Tuesday night, the board amended to take earbuds, as one of the devices listed on the previous proposal, out of the policy, meaning students can use earbuds during the school day.
